Step 0 • Zero-Jargon Layman Summary

“An easy-to-use mobile and tablet app designed for elderly dementia patients in Northeast India that uses fun, culturally familiar voice-controlled games to keep their minds active. It helps them remember daily tasks like taking medicines while letting their families and doctors track their mental health progress, even without an internet connection.”

Deconstructed Problem Blueprint

Step 1

WHAT TO BUILD?

An offline-first, voice-enabled mobile/tablet cognitive therapy application featuring adaptive games, localized North Eastern cultural themes, automated multilingual reminders, and a secure caregiver monitoring dashboard.

Step 2

WHO IS IT FOR?

Elderly dementia and cognitive decline patients in the North Eastern Region (NER), their family caregivers, local healthcare workers, and regional medical officers.

Step 3

WHY DOES IT EXIST?

Remote geographical terrain in NER limits access to physical neurological clinics. Existing cognitive therapy apps are in English/Hindi, lack local cultural context (making them confusing for NER elders), and fail to work in areas with poor internet connectivity.

Step 4

INPUT → PROCESS → OUTPUT ARCHITECTURE PIPELINE

01 • Inputs & Telemetry

Voice commands in regional languages (Assamese, Manipuri, Khasi, etc.), touch interactions (taps, drag-and-drop, reaction times), patient profile details, daily schedule inputs (medicines, hydration), and caregiver configurations.

02 • Processing & AI Core

On-device Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for regional languages, Reinforcement Learning (Q-learning) for adaptive game difficulty scaling, local SQLite/Room DB synchronization, and cognitive performance analytics (attention span, memory recall accuracy, reaction speed).

03 • Actionable Deliverables

Interactive localized games, voice-guided prompts, push notifications/SMS reminders, real-time caregiver dashboards with cognitive decline trend charts, and offline-sync status alerts.

Step 5

CONSTRAINTS

  • Must work offline-first with local database sync
  • Must support low-resource NER languages (Assamese, Manipuri, Khasi, Garo, Mizo)
  • Must have an ultra-simplified UI for elderly users with motor/cognitive impairments
  • Must run smoothly on low-end Android tablets/phones
Step 6

JURY METRICS

  • Game adaptation latency (<500ms)
  • Speech-to-Text accuracy for regional accents (>85%)
  • Offline sync reliability (zero data loss on reconnection)
  • System Usability Scale (SUS) score for elderly (>80/100)
  • Battery consumption rate on low-end devices
Step 7

CORE BOTTLENECK

Building a highly accurate, lightweight, offline-capable Speech-to-Text (STT) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine for low-resource North-Eastern languages that can run locally on budget Android devices without cloud APIs.

Why You Should Choose This PS (Pros)

  • High social impact in an underserved region, which strongly appeals to government ministry judges.
  • Clear, tangible deliverables (games, dashboards, voice) that make for an impressive live demonstration.
  • Great opportunity to showcase edge-AI (offline speech and on-device adaptation).

Challenges & Risks to Watch (Cons)

  • High dependency on localized content creation (art, audio, language translation).
  • Difficulty in testing with actual dementia patients during a 36-hour hackathon.
  • Complexity of building robust offline-first synchronization without data conflicts.

Killer Features to Impress the SIH Jury

Cultural Nostalgia Memory Lane: A game where patients identify local NER landmarks, traditional festivals (like Bihu, Hornbill), and folk music, triggering positive emotional memories.
Voice-First Companion 'Didi/Dada': An interactive, offline-capable voice avatar that speaks the local dialect, guides the user through games, and gently reminds them to drink water or take pills.
Dual-Mode Caregiver Portal: A web dashboard for doctors/caregivers showing detailed cognitive trajectory graphs (using standard MMSE-like digital scoring) with automatic SMS alerts if a sudden drop in performance is detected.
Zero-Config Peer-to-Peer Sync: Local Wi-Fi/Bluetooth mesh syncing between the patient's tablet and the caregiver's phone, allowing data transfer even in areas with absolutely zero cellular network.

BACKGROUND

The North Eastern Region (NER) is witnessing a gradual rise in age-related cognitive disorders such as dementia and memory loss among the elderly population. Many families in remote and rural areas face challenges in accessing specialized neurological care, cognitive therapy, and long-term elderly support services due to limited healthcare infrastructure and geographical barriers.

Elderly patients suffering from dementia often experience memory decline, confusion, anxiety, and social isolation, while caregivers face difficulties in continuous monitoring and engagement. There is limited availability of affordable and culturally inclusive digital therapeutic solutions tailored for elderly individuals in the North-Eastern Region.

To strengthen elderly healthcare and improve cognitive well-being, there is a need for an accessible, engaging, and Al-enabled cognitive gaming solution designed specifically for dementia patients in NER.

DESCRIPTION

This problem statement seeks the development of an AI-powered cognitive gaming and memory assistance platform for elderly dementia patients in the North Eastern Region.

The solution should:

a.Include interactive cognitive games and activities focused on:
•Memory improvement
•Attention and concentration 0 Daily routine recall
•Pattern and object recognition of emotional and mental engagement
b.Use AI/ML algorithms to adapt difficulty levels based on patient performance and cognitive condition
c.Support multilingual and voice-assisted interaction suitable for elderly users in NER Include culturally familiar themes, visuals, sounds, and regional language support for
d.better engagement
e.Provide reminders for:
•Medicines
•Hydration
•Daily activities
•Medical appointments.
f.Enable caregivers and healthcare workers to monitor patient progress through dashboards and activity levels
g.Work in low-connectivity environments with offline functionality support
h.Be accessible through mobile/tablet devices with a simple and elderly-friendly interface The platform should encourage long-term cognitive engagement, emotional well-being, and social interaction among elderly users.
EXPECTED SOLUTION

A user-friendly Al-enabled cognitive assistance platform with:

•Adaptive gaming and memory training modules
•Voice-enabled multilingual interface
•Cognitive performance tracking and analytics dashboard
•Caregiver monitoring and alert system
•Offline synchronization support for remote areas
•Secure patient data management system
•Simple and accessible UI/UX designed for elderly users The solution should support early cognitive intervention, improve quality of life for elderly dementia patients, and strengthen digital healthcare accessibility across the North Eastern Region.
