Design and Development of an Integrated Secure Data Erasure and Advanced File Recovery Tool for Digital Forensics and Data Sanitization
“Organizations need a reliable way to permanently destroy sensitive digital data so it can never be stolen, while law enforcement needs powerful tools to recover deleted files during criminal investigations. Currently, these require separate, expensive tools that create inefficiencies. This project builds a single unified platform that does both: military-grade secure data wiping and advanced forensic file recovery.”
Deconstructed Problem Blueprint
WHAT TO BUILD?
An integrated dual-purpose desktop and CLI software platform consisting of a Secure Drive & File Sanitization module alongside an Advanced File Carving and Recovery module.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Primary beneficiaries include the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), law enforcement agencies, cybercrime cells, military defense units, and corporate IT security teams.
WHY DOES IT EXIST?
Existing tools handle either deletion or recovery exclusively, forcing investigators to use fragmented software chains. Furthermore, standard file deletion only removes directory pointers while leaving raw data intact, posing massive national security and data leakage threats.
INPUT → PROCESS → OUTPUT ARCHITECTURE PIPELINE
Raw storage device blocks, formatted or corrupted disk images (RAW, E01, DD), targeted file paths, folders, and user configuration commands for wiping standards or carving signatures.
Overwriting storage sectors using multi-pass sanitization algorithms (NIST SP 800-88, DoD 5220.22-M), metadata stripping, and raw data stream parsing using signature-based file carving, entropy analysis, and automated heuristic fragment reconstruction.
Tamper-resistant cryptographic audit logs, compliance certificates (PDF/JSON), verified wiped status dashboards, and cleanly carved/recovered files organized by automated categorization with confidence scores.
CONSTRAINTS
- Must operate with low-level disk access rights across diverse operating systems (Windows/Linux/macOS)
- Must guarantee zero residual recoverable traces after sanitization across SSD wear-leveling controllers
- Must maintain cryptographic integrity hashes (SHA-256) of forensic evidence during carving
JURY METRICS
- Sanitization verification accuracy and adherence to DoD/NIST standards
- File carving recovery rate on heavily fragmented or partially overwritten media
- Execution speed and CPU/RAM resource footprint during heavy disk operations
- Completeness and cryptographic security of generated forensic audit reports
CORE BOTTLENECK
Successfully recovering fragmented files without file system metadata (file carving) and securely wiping flash memory (SSDs) where wear-leveling algorithms bypass direct logical-to-physical block mapping.
Why You Should Choose This PS (Pros)
- Extremely high national security relevance matching NTRO's core mandate
- Clear, distinct modular deliverables making task distribution among team members straightforward
- Strong potential for real-world deployment in defense and cyber forensics labs
Challenges & Risks to Watch (Cons)
- Requires low-level system programming and direct storage controller interaction
- Testing destructive wiping and recovery requires careful sandboxing to avoid wiping host development machines
- Advanced file carving algorithms can become computationally intensive
