Step 0 • Zero-Jargon Layman Summary

“We are building an offline-capable personal health companion app and wearable platform that continuously tracks vital signs and local weather hazards. It uses on-device artificial intelligence to instantly warn users of health emergencies like heat stroke, dehydration, or respiratory distress without needing internet connectivity. This ensures vulnerable populations remain safe during extreme weather and disaster events across India.”

Deconstructed Problem Blueprint

Step 1

WHAT TO BUILD?

A hybrid solution combining a cross-platform mobile application (Android/iOS) and a simulated/integrated hardware wearable software stack that performs continuous edge-AI health monitoring, environmental hazard tracking, offline alert generation, and emergency SOS handling.

Step 2

WHO IS IT FOR?

Primary beneficiaries include rural populations, elderly citizens, outdoor laborers, and chronic patients in India. End-users interact with the mobile app, while emergency-response agencies, public health departments, and caregivers monitor aggregated anonymous risk trends or receive direct SOS triggers.

Step 3

WHY DOES IT EXIST?

Climate change is driving severe, unpredictable heat waves, floods, and high air pollution episodes across India, exposing millions to sudden physiological collapse. Because rural and disaster-hit regions frequently experience communication blackouts and network failures, cloud-dependent health tracking systems completely fail when they are needed the most.

Step 4

INPUT → PROCESS → OUTPUT ARCHITECTURE PIPELINE

01 • Inputs & Telemetry

Physiological sensor data (Heart rate, SpO2, skin temperature, accelerometer motion data from wearable/phone), environmental weather data (local ambient temperature, humidity, AQI via smartphone GPS and local APIs), and user profile baselines.

02 • Processing & AI Core

Local edge-AI inference using lightweight quantized models (e.g., TensorFlow Lite / ONNX Runtime) running on-device to track baseline drift, detect anomaly signatures for heat stress or respiratory failure, evaluate environmental exposure risk scores, and check for sudden falls or motionlessness.

03 • Actionable Deliverables

Real-time on-device audio-visual warning banners, localized hydration and cooling recommendations, automated local mesh-network or SMS SOS alerts with GPS coordinates, and a comprehensive daily personal wellness dashboard.

Step 5

CONSTRAINTS

  • Must run entirely offline on-device to ensure privacy and functionality during network blackouts
  • Must optimize power consumption to prevent draining mobile or wearable batteries rapidly
  • Must operate seamlessly across low-end Android smartphones commonly used by rural and working-class citizens
  • Strict data privacy compliance ensuring zero raw health telemetry leaves the device without explicit consent
Step 6

JURY METRICS

  • On-device AI inference latency under 100ms
  • False alarm rate for fall detection and heat stress below 5%
  • Battery drainage impact of under 3% per hour of continuous background monitoring
  • UI simplicity and accessibility for elderly or low-literacy users
Step 7

CORE BOTTLENECK

Balancing real-time continuous time-series anomaly detection on resource-constrained edge hardware without excessively draining the smartphone or wearable battery.

Why You Should Choose This PS (Pros)

  • Sponsored by Qualcomm, making alignment with Snapdragon edge-AI acceleration frameworks an instant evaluation booster
  • Extremely high social and national impact addressing climate resilience and public health in India
  • Clear, modular architecture allowing teams to successfully build a functional prototype within 36 hours

Challenges & Risks to Watch (Cons)

  • Hardware-software integration can be unpredictable during live offline judging if physical sensors fail
  • Defining accurate clinical thresholds for disease and heat-stress prediction without medical validation datasets can be tricky
  • Crowded domain if teams only build standard step-counters and basic heart-rate dashboards

Background India faces recurring public health challenges during and after disasters such as heat waves, floods, cyclones, air pollution events, disease outbreaks, and extreme weather conditions. Heat stress, dehydration, respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular complications, and delayed access to healthcare are common during such events.

Rural populations, elderly citizens, outdoor workers, and people with chronic medical conditions are particularly vulnerable. Climate-related hazards are increasing in frequency and intensity, creating a need for continuous, personalized health monitoring that can function even when connectivity and healthcare access are disrupted.

Advances in edge AI now enable wearable devices and mobile phones to analyze health data locally, providing real-time insights while preserving user privacy and operating without constant cloud connectivity. Local AI processing can support health monitoring in remote and underserved areas where internet access may be limited.

Description Develop a Personal Health Companion, a privacy-preserving wearable or mobile application that continuously monitors an individual's physiological and environmental data and uses on-device AI to detect potential health anomalies in real time. The solution should analyze data from sensors such as heart rate, blood oxygen (SpO?), body temperature, activity levels, sleep patterns, and environmental conditions. The system should identify early indicators of heat stress, dehydration, respiratory distress, abnormal vital signs, fatigue, falls, and other health risks that may be exacerbated during disasters and environmental emergencies. All sensitive health data should be processed locally on the device to maximize privacy, minimize latency, and ensure continuous operation even during network outages. The application should provide actionable alerts, wellness recommendations, and emergency notifications while allowing users to maintain control over their personal health information. Edge AI approaches provide faster responses, improved privacy, and offline functionality.

Expected Solution The proposed solution should implement some or all of the following:
